For Those Who Are Considering Attending UNCC

Thinking of Attending UNCC, University of North Carolina at Charlotte?

Hi! I'm Jay Jones,  Head Moderator.

When you read through this blog, you will not find wonderful things said about the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. There's no gushing testimony of the absolute awesomeness of its faculty, or the success of its graduates. These are all very subjective and things which the university itself has the staff and resources to tell you. Just Google "Welcome to UNCC" and you'll see four entire pages of Google welcomes from various departments and clubs that will promise you all sorts of unverifiable delights.

What you will read in this blog, however, is that UNCC is located in a bad neighborhood. The area adjacent to the UNCC campus averages OVER fifty crimes per week, all within walking distance. Since March of 2012, there were five reported rapes/sexual assaults on campus, four of which occurred in women's dormitories. The other occurred in a women's bathroom in a very large and well-traveled class building. The perpetrator escaped.

In February 2014 (after the latest rape in a dormitory), UNCC stopped publishing the Clery Reports online. To see the daily reports one must call the Campus Police at 704-687-8300. (See the website here).  If one wants to remain informed of campus crime, one must either wait until the UNCC campus police department sends out a text warning (sent only under extreme cases), go to campus police and ASK for a printout of reports, or wait until the end of the year when the yearly report is published. 20014's yearly report was published October 2015. What does that tell you?). The fact that UNCC stopped publishing its daily security reports online points to the possibility that UNCC is greatly concerned about its on-campus safety reputation. This doesn't help students to evaluate the safety of the campus before enrolling, does it?

Another thing: the parking situation is miserable. One student compared buying a UNCC campus parking permit to buying a lottery ticket. You may spend more time looking for a parking place than you will spend in class.

Online discussions about UNCC occur frequently. Some can be found on College Confidential , Students Review, and City Data. The weirdest discussion we've seen about UNCC on City Data can be found here. Form your own conclusions.

This website has been accused of bias because we publish news reports that reflect poorly upon UNCC, the things one will not find published by UNCC on any of its own websites. UNCC has its own PR apparatus and the wherewithal to keep you informed of student programs and organizations and the supposedly many wonderful things to do on-campus. This website is a news aggregator, and little more. We report what the administration won't tell its own students.

Foreign students: we highly recommend that you spend the time reading through this blog before you enroll in UNCC.

Head Moderator

These are outdated statistics. I KNOW that there is much more theft on-campus than is reported here. Car beak-ins are common. While it is nice that the school provides transportation from certain areas of the campus to the dorms at night, it often takes awhile for the ride to arrive.

I agree that the campus is in a high crime area. I feel sorry for out-of-state students and foreign students who live on campus. There is little to do on weekends, and even less to do in the area immediately outside campus. Those who live in an apartment near campus run the risk of being a victim of burglary or violent crime. Crossing University Boulevard or Tryon Streets is quite hazardous, especially at night.

Those who have left insulting replies on this blog are (apparently) unaware of their surroundings. I am sure that they'll change their attitude as soon as their cars are broken into or when they are robbed or mugged one night on campus.

Being an international student, I am considering UNCC for its Master in Engineering Management since I haven't found an other one in Norht Carolina.
I really enjoyed this university but this blog is very critical... in order to help me to evaluate the credit I can give to those informations, would you like to answer to this simple question : "Why have you created this blog ?"

At August 5, 2013 at 5:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you for your candid and informative blog. My youngest was up for a very prestigious full ride scholarship at UNC- Charlotte. After viewing your site, and doing a little research on our own, we too were very concerned about the high crime rate. To risk ones life at a mediocre school (even if offered a full ride) was a ridiculous proposition.

This is an incredibly biased blog. Interesting but biased. Parking is a gigantic rip off and there is very high crime on campus. My car was broken into while parked in West Deck last fall semester. The school however is not mediocre. As a CS undergrad transfer student I am satisfied with the level of education I am receiving. No it is not Harvard or NYU. If you are looking for either at $7200 a year add on another $1000 in tuition and try UNC-CH...and then enjoy being wait listed for two years.

I wish the blog did not seem like the author has some sort of vendetta against the school. If it didn't, then it would be more effective. Linking up to news stories doesn't make your message seem more credible except only to those who take things at face value. Cherry picking only bad news about the school is proof positive of your bias and makes you just as bad as the public relations dept of the school.

..Getting off my soapbox now, but before I go...the idea of football at the school was idiotic. $1000 seat rentals even more so...uhh go niners?

Harvard is the 2nd most dangerous school in the country (see link below). Would you not send you kid there? This girl must have something personal against UNCC. I went there and also lived in the area for seven years until about 2010. The campus is full if preppy college kids, not sure how people consider that dangerous. I live in uptown Charlotte now in a luxury highrise condo and I'm a VP at Bank of America. I still drive to university area all time to do shopping and feel perfectly safe.http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2010/09...

I read an article that shows Duke is the 3rd most dangerous campus in the country (link below)! Not just in NC but the whole country. Why doesn't this girl compare to other NC schools and not just beat up on UNCC. UNCC campus is safe. If you drive south on Tryon for a while it gets a little bad but the actual campus area is fine.

REPLY: This blog is not about Harvard's problems. The purpose of this blog is to raise the awareness of everyone who works for, studies at, and lives at UNCC. Yes, the campus is safe. This is because we have one of the finest campus police in the country.

This is the Information Age. Stay informed.

So basically don't send your kid to UCLA, Berkeley, Duke, Vandy, GT, MIT (prob the best school in US), Cal St, etc.? And, BTW, UNC Charlotte is not on this list of most dangerous schools in US.

UNCC isn't so bad. There are 2-4 rapes in the girls's dorms every year. My gf keeps a .27mm under her pillow, so she has few worries. There are lots of gays and guys who dress like girls, but if you know what you like (like I do) I can tell the difference. The faggots are a minor annoyance.

The crime outside of campous is no joke. It is bad for sure, but if you stay at school or if you go home after class (like 99% of the students) you'll be okay. Me and my gf are out of staters, so we spend our time studying in our dorms and having sex. With that to do, there are few reasons to leave campous. My gf rocks. Its easy to stay safe.

We don't directly report campus crime. The campus police publishes it ten months after its occurrence. Rapes are reported to local media, and this blog links to the report. But I guess that you're smart enough to figure that out.

Maybe not.

Have you read past the first page? There are over 1500 entries. We don't make this stuff up. We don't need to. But we're as concerned as you are. That's why we have this blog.

Have a good day and stay safe.

i live in this area, walk around campus at night all the time, and ive never seen anything. what do you have to gain from lying to people. you can talk all this shit about uncc but the bottom line is the people who go here love it. ive never met a person who left because of violence or parking for crying out loud. get real. its charlotte of course there is crime but uncc campus is just like any other campus in a city. it has crime but its not a hell hole
