UNC Suspends Honor Court Due to Retaliation Claim

"...Thorp also invoked the Carolina community’s long tradition of encouraging students to exercise their right to speak out..."

Uh huh.

What a crock of grits.

UNC Sex Assault Victim Faces Possible Expulsion for Speaking to Media

Does the UNC system  exercise its obligation to address students' complaints when it's easier to sweep them under the rug? Now UNC itself claims retaliation against UNC. How do students "retaliate" against UNC when UNC holds all of the cards and can hold the threat of expulsion over students' heads?  Expulsion is easier than dealing with the problem.

The entire UNC system needs to take a look at itself, the history of complaints against the system, how it has handled the complaints, and whether any real solution came of the complaint process. Telling the student that "We're right and you're wrong" settles nothing.

While this incident took place at UNC-CH, the outcome affects all UNC campuses. All UNC-systems students should pay very close attention to this story.

PaTS: That Bloated, Insatiable Money Machine

Aaron, the student who received an exorbitant ticket from PaTS for being broken down in a reserved parking zone outside Holshouser dorm was caught between two campus services: Campus Police, who gave him until March 13th to move his automobile, and PaTS, who really doesn't give a damn about his plight and finds the situation inexcusable.

It is assumed that Aaron already paid an outrageous sum for on-campus parking. Apparently, $415.00 per year isn't enough. Another $150.00 helps to fill the coffers of PaTS, thus providing more revenue for the school.

Think about it: for creating a POSSIBLE inconvenience for those for whom the parking space was reserved, the student is fined to what amounts to almost 30% of the privilege to park anywhere in the student parking areas (providing that he can FIND somewhere to park). The campus police (who apparently have a good grip on the challenges of campus parking) gave him until the 13th of March to clear out. PaTS found the situation inexcusable under any situation.

The fine is clearly not proportional to the transgression. Ten dollars is a more reasonable  fine for the heinous crime of breaking down in a reserved campus parking space. (For whom are the spaces reserved anyway? The President of the United States? Hugh McColl? Uncle Phil Dubois? If reserved parking is so important, why was Aaron even able to find unoccupied reserved parking space? Has anyone noticed that outside of the faculty areas, reserved parking spaces are almost never occupied except by delivery trucks?).

Yes, ten dollars and the inconvenience and irritation of having to deal with the demigods of PaTS is surely sufficient punishment for Aaron's transgression. (What was Kim Church's fine for lying under oath? Huh? Somehow, Aaron's ticket and transgression don't seem fair compared to the slap on the wrist that Kim Church received for her transgression. The argument about different departments and services just doesn't hold up, so don't even THINK of bringing it up).

I've NEVER seen a ticket on an improperly parked faculty automobile. This is partially due to the fact that nobody wants to hear overpaid faculty whine about not being able to find a parking space. (Yes, I said OVERPAID faculty. If a faculty member wants to take issue with this statement, it is suggested that he get a REAL job like working for UPS. Then we can talk).

There is no end to the needs and desires of the UNCC money machine, of which PaTS is an essential part. At some point, somebody needs to flip the switch and turn off that machine before students are Hoovered to death.

More Crime Within 3 Miles of UNCC

What the City of Charlotte Doesn't Want You to Know.

It's a Ghetto Out There.

The Customers Always Write

We received this email and we feel  compelled to respond to it in the same spirit in which it was written.

"I live here and feel completely safe. Can you find any large college in the States that doesn't have some sort of crime? I also like how you leave out any kind of positive information. I mean look at the reviews on collegeprowler.com and ratemyprofessor.com they are much better. Maybe find something better to do than sitting around only blogging negative information on a school."

You feel completely safe despite the fact that the blog addresses problems associated with attending class and living in or near UNCC. We accept that. Are you cognizant of the fact that everything that is posted in this blog comes from other  news sources?

Quite frankly, we don't give a flying kite if other U.S. schools have similar problems.  Charlotte has about 500,000 residents. (This figure excludes surrounding areas such as Gastonia and Lincoln county which rate dismally low on the USA Today and Psychology Today's lists of America's ratings of America's "Most Liveable Cities"). This makes it a comparatively small town.

Moderators on this blog do not feel compelled to look for "good news" about UNCC. The university has a PAID public relations department to attend to this task. Its responsibility is not to tell the whole truth but to tell that which makes people feel good. What has been its effect upon you? Haven't you read enough feel-good news about UNCC?

No? Do you wonder why?

We tell the truth, but  you feel unhappy. Connect the dots.

Really.

College Prowler and ratemyprofessor.com ( a revelation to us) spouts good news about professors BY professors. We've taken classes taught by some of the highly-rated professors. We haven't rated any of them, but some probably  don't cut the muster of most serious students.

UNCC is a suitcase commuter school. Accept that fact. Most students have low expectations of their professors. Of course, students are happy as long as they receive a B for attending class occasionally. (We could cite several professors' ratings, but we won't).

Again, the administrators of this blog feel NO obligation to promote the university as long as the university is surrounded by a crime-ridden ghetto.

Thank you for writing.

God bless and keep you.

Seven Thousand Visits in Seven Months: Why We Started This Blog

We started it so that the prospective and current UNCC student would know what occurs in and around the UNCC campus. With the exception of a few entries all of the pages are referrals to news sources. In the beginning, there were so many news articles about UNCC and University City that it was difficult to decide what to publish. Most of the coverage was crime news.

Interestingly, the local media outlets stopped reporting on crime in the UNCC area in mid- December when the infamous campus DUI case involving the UNCC police officer Kim Church was about to go to trial. Had the case gone to trial, a firestorm of negative publicity might have erupted, even though the alleged DUI perpetrator (more probably a victim of date rape) wasn't even a student at UNCC. At that point in UNCC's expansion, the university couldn't afford negative publicity. It still cannot afford negative publicity. UNCC is relying upon the over-nurtured athletics program to wet-nurse the rest of the university with its fifty-ton teat called McColl-Richardson Field, the future home of the Forty Niners football team.

The police reports continue to be published and re-reported by sources such as SpotCrime, but details are scant. Media crime coverage has shifted to south Charlotte, Union County, Lancaster County, and Rowan County, yet crime occurs daily in and around the UNCC campus and University City.

Are the media in bed with the UNC system? It is difficult to know, but evidence that UNC administrators have tried to suppress news of sexual assaults on at least one campus makes one wonder. This speculation aroused almost no attention by local media, making an unfathomable relationship possible.  Equally incomprehensible is how the local news media wrote endless stories about and tributes to a UNCC student who fell to his death while hiking several months ago, yet NO attention was paid to the recent campus suicide in Lynch Hall. Aside from the mandated Clery Reports published by the campus police, there has been no notice paid to this event nor to yet another attempted suicide at the Kappa Sigma Fraternity House. (There have been at least two attempted suicides on campus or immediately off-campus this year). Worse, the last time we looked, there were NO compiled Clery Report data for 2012. So that our readers don't need to wait two years for 2013's statistics, we have begun compiling monthly data as it is released by campus police.

No news is NOT good news. No news is just no news. When we find out something, we'll let our growing readership know. Please communicate with us. If you know of something that others should know about, leave a message at the bottom of a page. If you don't want to be identified or if you don't want the information released, we won't act on it. We'll investigate your anonymous tip on our own. Unless you email us, your messages are untraceable.

Keep us informed so we may continue to keep everyone else informed.

Truly,

Jay, Jayne, Jasmine, and Cee Jay.

UNCC Faculty Forum Summaries--- Pfffft

"...Summary of ideas that came out of the Oct. 23rd forum at UNC-CH – sponsored by a coalition of faculty, students, and staff and attended by 140 people..."

"The university is first of all accountable to its students—not simply that it owes its students jobs at graduation [Since when has that ever been a goal of UNCC?], but that the university owes its students unfettered access to the best teachers the school has to offer in whatever area of study they choose to pursue..."

"...The third group the university is accountable to is the faculty and staff of the university, who should be encouraged and supported, not demoralized and exploited... " [Right. Demoralized and exploited. Publish the faculty members' salaries and the hours worked and THEN talk about exploitation. Some of these faculty members need to work a year or two at Wendy's or McDonald's or CMPD].

"The mission of the University of North Carolina and its 16 institutions of higher education, as articulated in its mission statement, is “to address the needs of individuals and society,” and it does this through instruction, which imparts the skills and values needed “to lead responsible, productive, and personally satisfying lives.' ”

“to address the needs of individuals and society,” [Time to move on here. Do they mean students or just faculty? Let the UNCC faculty eat Cap'n Crunch].

That faculty assembly must have been one obscene cluster f*ck.

http://www.foxcharlotte.com/news/top-stories/No-More-Freshmen-at-UNC-Charlotte-----177060481.html

by Kirk Hawkins,

Photojournalist Terrance Walker

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--No More freshmen at UNC Charlotte? A battle is brewing to get the word "freshmen" out of the school's vocabulary. Supporters say its sexist and outdated.

Amy Brown is enjoying her freshman year at UNC Charlotte. "I love it. It's so much fun," said the Emerald Isle native. But, a new move could change what refers to her first year on campus.
"I don't think they should change it," Brown said.

But one member of the staff here disagrees. Kelly Finley, a lecturer in Gender and Women's Studies said the term should be more gender neutral, "It makes sense grammatically and as
an institution of higher learning, we should reflect the evolution of language so it reflects the reality that more women than men are enrolled at the university." she said.

UNC Chapel Hill recently removed references to freshmen from official documents.  We talked to officials here at UNC Charlotte and they say they don't plan to do the same thing. Sophomore Mia Fowler is from Raleigh, "I think everyone should be treated equal," she said.

Students shared their reaction to the possibility of the term change. "It's just a term and doesn't define me, it's based on your hours anyway," said Statesville resident Patricia Mattox. "I feel it's just not that big of a deal, you know?" said Asheville, North Carolina resident J.D. Conwell

The U.N.C. Charlotte Admissions Office said they haven't taken an official stance. They say one reason for the switch could be that more and more students are not true freshmen because of the number of credits they've completed before even  starting college.

UNCC vs UNCW: a Review

READ the Whole Review on Reddit:  <---Click here

"...Housing is tricky. Being a city area, UNCC has its fair share of crime. Do your research, study crime maps, and you'll be fine...."

"... About UNCC a bit. UNCC is a commuter college. It is a college where there are LOTs of people from the business community furthering their education. They [UNCC] are most noted for their Business college. What this means is there are a lot of people that go to school here that do not live there. Parking on campus sucks and is expensive. Local apartments can be safe if not right next to the school. Will pay a good bit more though.
Local attractions: lots of shit bars (to to be confused with dive bar,) lots of crime in the university area due to low income housing, low quality food establishments in the immediate area...."

"...Definitely UNCW. Charlotte is much more of a commuter school and I don't think you'll get the same college experience..."

"...For the love of god, go to UNCW. Visit the beach this time. It's easy getting a job as an extra on whatever tv show or movie they're filming there, too. I made like $100 a day just being a One Tree Hill extra, doing that about once a week the whole time I was a student. It's a town beautiful enough for film. Charlotte is poop..."

"...Current UNCC student here, avoid this school at all costs. While you can find things to do around the Charlotte area, the school (professors and faculty) are a real hassle to deal with and could care less about helping you succeed in your goals in getting an education. I'm graduating in the spring, but plan on continuing education elsewhere..."
